WHY DO WE HANG STOCKINGS AT CHRISTMAS?

The tradition of leaving Christmas gifts in stockings is said to not actually have begun in the form as we know it today – rather, in the 1100s, children were told to leave their shoes out the night before Christmas. If they had been good, they would be filled with treats; if they’d been found to be otherwise, they’d be filled with coal.

The transition from shoes to stockings is unclear – though a popular attribution is to the story of St Nicholas, a bishop of noble parentage who heard of a family’s dire circumstances. Rather than offer coins directly to the proud patriarch of the family, he dropped the coins down the family’s chimney – which then landed in the daughter’s stockings which were drying by the fireplace.

WHERE DOES THE NAME ‘BOXING DAY’ ORIGINATE?

There are two widely-accepted theories as to where the term ‘Boxing Day’ comes from. The first, is that it started in the 1800s, when the wealthy would give their servants the day off after Christmas festivities, often sending them away with a box of small gifts and leftover food. The second is that like the holiday it succeeds, Boxing Day has its origins in Christianity, and references the almsgiving plate passed around church services, the contributions of which were handed out on the feast of St Stephens – December 26.
