Branch Rickey was an American professional baseball executive. He was best known for breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier by signing African American player Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He was also the first president and general manager of the former Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers franchise, and the first president of the former Major League Baseball expansion team, the Montreal Expos. Rickey was born in Flat, Ohio, on December 20, 1881. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University, where he played baseball and football. After graduating in 1904, he began his professional baseball career as a catcher in the minor leagues. He eventually became a manager and then a general manager in the minor leagues. In 1916, Rickey was hired by the St. Louis Cardinals as a general manager. He was responsible for signing several future Hall of Famers, including Rogers Hornsby and Dizzy Dean. He also signed African American players, including Hall of Famer Cool Papa Bell. In 1942, Rickey was hired by the Brooklyn Dodgers as president and general manager. He was responsible for signing Jackie Robinson, who became the first African American to play in the major leagues. Rickey also signed several other African American players, including Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe. Rickey was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967.
