I actually don’t mind when Kate Hudson takes about weight. I think she has an insane figure and I feel like CB does, that Kate speaks about it in a very healthy manner, losing it in a reasonable timeframe and not going to extremes to get there. In addition, she doesn’t pretend like she doesn’t work hard to maintain her figure and admits she slips up. Kate’s book, Pretty Happy: Ways to Love Your Body, was released in February. She also has her Fabletics activewear line so it makes sense she is still speaking about bodies and weight in interviews. She was recently on Chelsea Handler’s show and they discussed Kate’s weight gain during her pregnancies and her struggle to lose the baby weight.

Kate Hudson can still remember a time when she didn’t feel her best self, physically.

“Remember when you had that first baby and you gained like 150 lbs.?” Chelsea Handler jokes to the actress on Wednesday’s episode of her Netflix show Chelsea. “It was like Shallow Hal, remember? Oh my God.”

“I loved it too — I relished in that moment of my [life],” she says.
There’s one specific instance that occurred the month before her now almost-teenage son‘s birth that Hudson remembers extra fondly.

Ways to Love Your Body encourages readers toward living a healthy lifestyle without putting too much pressure on themselves to be “perfect” — says it was a bit of a wake-up call in conjunction with advice from her OB/GYN.

“Even my doctor was like, ‘You know, you should try not to eat so much,’ ” she recalls. “And then after I had Ryder, that was when it sort of hit me … and then, trying to lose the weight and being in that year of my life was really interesting, ’cause then all of a sudden you have the baby and then all of a sudden you’re 70 lbs. overweight.”

“Then all of a sudden you feel very scrutinized, then all of a sudden you feel like you need to hurry up and [lose the weight].”

Continues the actress, “And it was actually emotional ’cause I couldn’t lose the weight. You plateau. Anybody who’s had that moment in their life, it just sucks.”

“There’s a catch-22 — it is just about health, isn’t it?” she says.

“So you have to then say, ‘Well, f— the people who are scrutinizing me, but I do want to get healthy. I don’t want to keep the weight on like that. I don’t want to get discouraged.’

I got irrationally angry at Handler’s Shallow Hal joke. She and Kate are friends so I’m sure Kate wasn’t bothered but it sounded so insensitive to me, which is pretty standard for how I feel about all Handler’s comments. Kate also told a story about Ben Stiller in which she went to a party at his house in a size 2 spandex dress two weeks before she gave birth to Ryder and he opened the door and said, “You’re huge.” I get the feeling that Kate is trying to be relatable here but she has used those numbers before. Medical recommendations for a normal pregnancy weight gain is 25-35 pounds or 28-40 pounds for underweight women so if Kate put on 70 pounds, yes, her gain was more than is medically suggested. I did not gain 70 pounds with either pregnancy but I did feel like Kate. I was called huge, asked if I was sure I wasn’t having twins and had my due date questioned throughout both but I never felt bad about it. Even now I see pics of myself and all I see is a pregnant woman. I challenge Handler to call me Shallow Hal, though – I’d relish the opportunity to respond to that.

Even with her fitness push, Kate is returning to acting. Not only is she apparently pitching a comedy series with her mother, Goldie Hawn, but I didn’t realize she is playing Richard Pryor’s widow, Jennifer Lee, alongside Eddie Murphy in the Lee Daniels’ film Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said.
