Mercedes Mone Has Been Drawing a Check from AEW for Quite Some Time
AEW is gearing up for momentous event dubbed “Big Business” at Boston’s iconic TD Garden, and fans can expect some major developments, including the highly anticipated debut of Mercedes Mone. However, the road to Mercedes’ arrival in AEW has been rife with negotiations and setbacks.
Initially, WWE was in talks with Mercedes Mone towards the end of December, but discussions fell through due to financial obstacles, similar to previous negotiations with AEW. Despite the initial setback, talks with AEW persisted, eventually culminating in an agreement. Interestingly, WWE publicly acknowledged the conclusion of their discussions, signaling a shift in Mercedes’ trajectory.
While there was contemplation over when to announce or debut Mercedes, it was ultimately decided to hold off until the TD Garden event, according to Fightful Select. Numerous possibilities were explored, but the decision to unveil Mercedes at the March 13th show had been solidified for weeks, coinciding with the announcement of the February 7th show.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Mercedes has been on AEW’s payroll since January, indicating the company’s commitment to integrating her into their roster.
Mercedes Mone’s journey to AEW hasn’t been without obstacles, as she suffered an ankle injury during a NJPW Strong Women’s Title match against Willow Nightingale, sidelining her for an extended period and stalling her momentum. Despite rumors suggesting an early appearance at New York’s Grand Slam show, sources confirmed that Mercedes was far from being ring-ready at the time, with NJPW sources indicating that she was neither cleared nor had resumed training. Discussions internally within New Japan expressed an expectation to continue working with her once she recovered.
With AEW’s “Big Business” event on the horizon, fans eagerly await Mercedes Mone’s debut and the potential impact she will bring to the promotion’s dynamic roster.
